Gravity Wave adapts the synth engine from Fragments with the goal of building a unique sounding atmospheric synth. Gravity Wave uses very long waveforms which increases the complexity of the end result forming unique landscapes sometimes reminiscent of the Korg Wavestation. The samples used come from the previous releases of Fragments, Air Waves and Air Tones although they have been reprocessed into very long complex waveforms from which the sounds are pulled. Having the combination of the Radio Waves and Musical Sounds, it can make for some very interesting and unique Pads when mixed together.

Gravity Wave has 2 Synthesizers each using 8 sequencers to Sequence the Volume, Filter Cutoff, Loop Length, Loop start, Pan, Drive Amount, Delay Send and Reverb Send. This is a huge amount of Motion available to shape the character. In terms of sample playback, the loop start and length allows moving around the underlying samples, and because they are large results in unique and surprising sequences.

Like all other HGS Instruments there are sophisticated Global Randomizers with different styles ranging from Tempo based rhythmic to less Rhythmic styles. 100 Presets are included, although it is just a click of a button to generate your own unique sounds. The presets from Fragments are also included, although they will not sound the same as they do in Fragments, they can be interesting to explore.

Both Instruments use 4 advanced monophonic Sequencers to control 4 Synthesizers. Any sequencer can target any or all of the synths making it a very flexible system.

It uses 12 Patterns which hold all Sequencing data which are switched either by using the GUI buttons, or a dedicated Octave on your Keyboard (shown in red on the Kontakt Midi Keyboard Display). The idea is that you perform these patterns using this switching to create unique and complex Sequences easily.

The Scale Remapper, automatically re-pitches so that Sequences always align with the Scale and can be used Globally or use a different Scale for each pattern.

Dark Matter is an Advanced Loop Re-Sequencer which works with tempo synced Loops in a variety of ways.

It has 13 Sequencer Rows and uses 889 loops across 7 Banks at it’s core which includes Synth Sequences, Morphing Sounds, Radio Sounds, Drum Hits and Loops. Sections of any of these can be selected on each step using the Slice Sequencer which allows and of 16 start points to be chosen.

There are also 22 modes for each bank that include things such as LFO Chops and reverse modes.

Emergent Properties is an Advanced Wave Sequencer which has a main Melodic sequencer plus 2 additional Drum sequencers.

The main Sequencer is designed around complex Wave Sequencing using a large collection of over 1000 Morphing Samples which evolve through different sounds. Each sequencer has it’s own Step length and the Bank, Wave and Slice sequencers add up to determine which Sample will be played.

Additionally there are 30 Different Modes selected via the Mode sequencer lane, which can radically change the sound such as LFO Chopping, Reverse, Phasing and Talk type Modulation effects.

The idea behind Cassetto was to create a synthesizer which has an old and slightly faulty sound as well as a fairly fixed yet interesting architecture.

The end result is a synth with it’s own character and capable of some very unique tones. Although Kontakt is often used for complex samples, Cassetto uses sampled oscillators so that it is a true synthesizer and all sounds are constructed in the same way as any other subtractive synth, it comes with 200 presets with more to come, however it is also a synth that invites you to make your own.

Updated with new Kontakt 5 and Kontakt 6 Instruments, the latter makes use of the new Kontakt 6 Delay and reverb

Motion is an advanced Vector Synthesizer designed to create Evolving landscapes and Atmospheres with little effort due to a series of 8 tuned Global randomizers which generate unique and playable sounds most of the time. It is most useful for signature Ambience in a track and most definitely has a distinctive sound of it’s own. It uses short and single cycle waveforms to create sound and in this sense is a true synthesizer, like any other Subtractive synth sounds are generated by the User interface rather than relying on sampled presets. There are 504 Waveforms/Sounds over 4 Banks which use just 55mb of RAM. Some are drum/percussive one-shots which are very interesting in the Arpeggiator when Wave sequencing.

Motion was initially inspired by a Yamaha SY35, it is possible to record XY Vector movements as part of each preset. It goes much further than an SY35 however adding an additional 7 recordable XY Sequencers. There are 4 separate identical synthesizers with an XY which mixes between their volumes. Each Synthesizer has 2 ADSR Envelopes and 2 LFOs with plenty of simultaneous destinations. There is a dedicated XY Controller for the Cutoff and Resonance of each Synth as well as a Master controller which offsets all equally. Like the Volume these have dedicated sequencers which can be recorded per preset. There is also a large database of prerecorded sequences which can be selected by the Randomizers.

On top of that there is an Advanced Arpeggiator which can Wave Sequence each of the synths independently for some very interesting rhythms. It is also possible to re-trigger the XY Motion sequencers using the Retrig Sequencer which will decide which Motion Sequencer will reset, and the POS Sequencer determines the Position to re-trigger from.

The effects includes a Modulator (Phaser/Chorus/Flanger), a tempo delay and a Convolution Reverb with 49 Impulses.

Please Note this will only work in the full version of Kontakt 5.6, it will not work in the player or a version less than 5.6 due to extensively using the XY Controllers.

AirWaves is a unique Synthesizer which uses 24 XY Motion Sequencers to build collages using Shortwave Radio signals as its Sound Source. Shortwave Radio is an Alien World that has fascinated me since childhood and I’ve been wanting to explore making an instrument such as this for a long time. The Motion Sequencers ensure that you will always get something new using the many Randomizers, and presets can have an organically complex lifespan. Each Sequencer can be recorded manually by pressing Record, playing a note and moving the corresponding XY controller. Once the sequence is recorded it will be played back immediately. Alternatively there is a large database of prerecorded Sequences included which are used by the Randomizers.

The intention for the Scripted Instrument was to take some of the ideas used in Motion, adding 4 more Motion Sequencers and attempt to create a Synth that is visually less complex. As a result all of the sound generation is available on a single Panel, and there is only one other Panel which is dedicated to the FX and Preset Browser. The only XY controllers which cannot be recorded are those assigned to the Envelope Attack/Release which is a bit pointless as they cannot be manipulated in real-time by Kontakt.

The samples themselves are taken from many hours of recorded material, attempting to bring out the most interesting loops and to hopefully create a diverse collection of Sounds. The Radios are essentially used as synthesizers to create unique designed loops which are only possible using a radio. There are quite a few number stations captured too, although for the most part these days they tend to be either Morse or Electronic broadcasts as opposed to actual numbers although a few of these were captured. The samples are provided as WAVs as opposed to .ncw so that they can easily be used outside of Kontakt for those that wish to do so.

Whilst working on AirWaves which is more atmospheric than musical, it occurred that a traditionally musical synthesizer using the sine wave de-modulator signals would be interesting, and so AirTones was born.

The sounds use various tones and signals found on the radio to create the oscillators. They are lofi and come with whatever sound and noise is present to add a unique character to the tones. They were tried in the Cassetto engine and it was found to be perfect for exploring the tones. The great thing about doing this is that the presets are cross compatible and so all of the Cassetto presets are included as well as 100 specially created for AirTones. If you own Cassetto you can also copy the AirWaves Presets to your Cassetto folder to use them there. Obviously they will sound radically different due to the different sound sources, but can be very interesting!

It come with 100 samples which can be selected by either of the synthesizers two oscillators. The Synth is a dual synthesizer with 2 Filters, 3 LFOs, 3 Envelopes as well as a comprehensive FX Section. Also included is an Advanced Arpeggiator/Sequencer with 12 sequencers for various parameters, as well as many modes including standard Arps, chords and modulation only modes. There is also a Scale Remapper which can transform the pitch sequencer in real-time to any of the large types of Scales included.

Other features include a sophisticated Scala based Microtuner and an inbuilt preset system which uses an internal file browser to load presets/Scales. Finally, anyone who has used any HGS products knows that all products include comprehensive Randomizers on a Global and Local scale. Lots of work goes into making them musically useful,

This is a great companion Instrument for AirWaves which creates complex Atmospherics, but isn’t a particularly tuneful instrument and so AirTones provides exactly that purpose.

Fragments is an attempt at exploring Granular style synthesis within the Kontakt system. It uses Long Evolving Waveforms and the sound is generated by playing Looped Sections from these WAVs. The Loop Position and Length can be Sequenced in real-time via the Dedicated Loop sequencers which can create both Glitchy and interesting Pads.

It has a Dual Synth Architecture with both synths sharing the same features. As well as the 2 Loop Start and Length Sequencers, there are also another 6 Per Synth which control Cutoff, Volume, Pan, Drive, Reverb Send and Delay Send. The Sequencers use tempo based divisions making them great for tempo Synched Patterns, have a maximum of 128 steps and 11 choices of tempo division.

There are also 2 XY Pads which represent the currently visible Sequencers and will animate to show their current state when the Sequencers are in play Mode. They can also be used to record the Sequencers in real-time. When a sequencer not in Play Mode the XY controls the static value used for the destination amount.

Fragments was designed to be intuitive and easy to use with all parameters + 4 Sequencers visible. As with other HGS creations full use of local and Global Randomizers are available to instantly create unique and varied presets.There is also an internal presets system in place with a built in Browser.

Movement expands on Motion by adding a further 16 Motion Sequencers which takes it into new territory. It is also capable of much simpler sounds with ease using the simple Randomizer which adds a lot more scope for it’s sonic potential. There was an attempt at simplifying the powerful yet complex interface of Motion by keeping most parameters but that could be edited using a single Panel.

Movement uses 4 identical Synthesizers to create sound, each Synth has an Attack/Release Envelope, a Filter with the choice of 38 Filter Types, a single LFO with the choice of 6 Destinations and 31 LFO Shapes.

There are a total of 24 Motion Sequencers which include a Vector crossfade between the 4 Synths volumes, Pan, Tune, Filter Cutoff & Resonance, Synth Volumes, Start Offset, Bit Reduction, Samplerate Reduction, LFO Frequency and LFO Amount. The XY Pads can be recorded in realtime over 128 steps and have the ability to change the Amount and Frequency of playback. As well as the ability to Record the Motion Sequencers there is also an internal database of 200 prerecorded Sequences which are used by the Randomizers.

Like most other HGS Creations, Movement makes great use of optimized Global Randomizers with a choice of complexity as well as many Local Randomizers. The FX Section includes Chorus/Flanger/Phaser, a Reverb with 50 Impulse Responses, a Stereo Delay, an EQ, a Limiter, and a Microtuner with 300 Microtonal Presets.

ARP Stream is a modular style complex Sequencer with an Arpeggiator at it’s core. It features many different ways of manipulating pitch and tempo which can all interact with each other which makes it fascinating to explore. It also has 3 CC Sequencers which can target any CC number and also includes a profile Editor for making your own specific correctly named profiles for hardware etc.

SequencersAltogether there are 11 Sequencers. The top 4 target the usual suspects; Trigger, velocity, Note Length and Octave Offset whereas the bottom 4 are where things start to get interesting. The Repeat Sequencer serves 2 purposes, the first is the ability to play sub Gate Sequences. Each Step allows selecting the number of repeats and which Grid will be used if any. Secondly Every other Sequencer has an ‘RP’ Button which when enabled will repeat ‘X’ Repeats before moving forward.

The Stutter Sequencer allows splitting up each step into up to 32 stutter repeats which can range from rhythmic repeats to glitchy. There is also a Fade button which will fade them out to create a delay type of effect.

The Mode Sequencer has 26 different options per step. The first 13 deal primarily with Pitch (with the exception of Chord) which includes play Lowest/Highest held Note, play an Octave below or a Power chord etc.. These modes are followed by time based Modes (‘X/Y’) which rotate through Y steps only playing X notes. So 2/3 will play the second count of each 3 counts. Finally there are some random percentage modes consisting of 25%, 50%, 75% and 90%.

The last Sequencer allows overriding the Main Frequency setting and can create some very experimental and chaotic Rhythms. Th standard straight Frequencies are all lined up at the beginning and then followed by more exotic clock divisions.

There is a sophisticated Randomizer System with lots of options including local and global Randomizers. It’s a difficult machine to randomize really due to the potential for chaos everywhere in how everything combines so the Row randomizers are probably much more useful than the Global ones.

PatternsIt uses 12 patterns which is made up of all settings and they can be selected via the Midi Note Octave or via the GUI buttons.

Midi Looper is an exploration of live recordable step sequencers which works in a similar way to Guitar Loopers, except for MIDI notes. They are a fun and creative way to generate sequences and MIDI Looper brings a large selection of Record Modes which behave in different ways. There are 7 Sequencers in total and each one can be up to 128 steps in length. They are all polyphonic with up to 8 notes per step and some Modes allow overlapping steps.

The Sequencers are hard locked to the timeline, which is a first for HGS Instruments. This means that the Sequence is always accurate when using different step amounts or frequencies regardless of where Playback is started. The normal Mode when Hold is disabled is that the 7 Triggers (represented in red) will act as Gates and let a Sequence through when engaged. Alternatively DAW Automation can be used using the GUI Buttons. Everything except Modes and the Scale can be automated by the DAW, it was designed with this in mind to be a single control per Parameter.

Once Recorded the Sequencers can then be processed through the playback system with many options such as Play Mode, Velocity and Length Percentages, Probability and Gate Conditions. Additionally there are 7 Variations which allow overriding specific parameters with customized values. Only one Variation is selected at a time and each can have a unique Global Scale attached to it for re-pitching the output.

There is a Midi Recorder which starts recording the output of the Sequences as soon as Play is engaged in the DAW. Using drag n drop the Sequences can be exported at any time either to the DAW or elsewhere. Although Kontakt doesn’t support multi-channel Midi output, by using Multi Track, the exported streams will be separated into individual Sequences.

This is identical to the K6 version of Cassetto except it contains absolutely no samples except White Noise. It relies completely on Drag and Dropping your own samples into the 2 Oscillator slots. This has been requested by a couple of people and as a result it provides an easy way to use your own samples in this sophisticated Synth engine.

500 Morph WAVs are also included as a bonus ready for Dropping!
