Dream Protocols is the algorithmic translation of artistic strategies that deliberately rely on chance and the arbitrary assembly or remixing of texts. Going back to the early 20th century, Surrealists, Dadaists, and later the artists of the Beat Generation engaged with these methods, often with surprising results that are now part of the legacy of the early avant-garde. The Dream Protocols program follows, in the broadest sense, the principle of aleatoricism, the use of non-systematic operations that deliberately lead to unpredictable, largely random results.
Dream Protocols is therefore deliberately situated at the heart of many digital music productions as a KONTAKT instrument - it lines up as a tool in the collection of many sample instruments and thus becomes an organic component of KONTAKT's user interface. It is no longer necessary to switch to a browser or open extra apps. In line with KONTAKT's philosophy, the program can be controlled entirely via a MIDI keyboard, and existing MIDI data can trigger new words.
Æ | Dream Protocols offers a variety of word collections (WORD POOLS) from which words are displayed randomly. The word collections themselves come from specific themes, word families, lists, or compilations and are intended to expand the view of language: from portmanteau words to internet slang to 21st-century neologisms — the vitality of language culture is overwhelming, especially against the background of the systematic recording of these phenomena on the internet. Only the comprehensive collections of the modern web (e.g., Wikipedia / Wiktionary / Urban Dictionary etc.) make it possible to access the vast pools of words and phrases in a curated and meaningful way.
The strategy of chance should be applied in a directed and targeted manner: it's not about the arbitrary randomness of a word, but about a conscious artistic decision that emerges from interplay with chance.
The great vitality and diversity of language is already evident in the word collections. Above all, new media and the expansion of the digital virtual into our everyday living spaces demand and promote a constant expansion of language building blocks. A multitude of new cultural techniques have emerged that find cross-media application: sampling, remixing, customization, updates, placeholders, up to AI-based algorithms like Deep Dream or Deep Fake.
In this spirit, Dream Protocols is intended to provide impulses as an inspiring tool based on chance.
