This 1970s German classic from the 1970s has shaped the midrange of more records than you might imagine, yet very few people have even heard its name. For decades NEU-473A has been the secret weapon between the master tape and the vinyl cutter of countless hits, pulling their midrange forward and flawlessly polishing their tone.
For over 50 years, this highly versatile compressor has been the unsung hero among its contemporaries.
It's independent compressor, limiter, and expander modules make it suitable for both subtle applications and hard-core limiting. Our recreation of this studio classic features all of its signature functions including the handy De-Es and Bass-cut Switches for extra control beyond the mid-range that is the unit’s specialty.
In the heyday of vinyl, engineers weren’t bothered with the super-lows and highs when making records, as at the time the format didn’t allow them to. Before the final mix would hit the vinyl cutting machine – a mastering console had to polish the dynamics and tone. During the 1970-80s, some of the most in-demand mastering consoles for that purpose came from Germany with pairs of the U473/U473A VCA compressors, doing all the heavy lifting. As the years progressed, these rare units remained behind the curtains while shaping the mid-range of countless legendary records. We are bringing this studio legend back to life to ensure its legacy will continue to grow in the digital domain.
The hardware original that inspired NEU-473A was designed to work the mid-range. It made its way out into recording and mixing studios due to its aggressive transient grabbing abilities and forwardness in the mids. Our faithful recreation of this German hidden gem is the perfect tone- and dynamics-shaping tool for all stages of your record-making process where the mid-range needs to be pulled forward in the mix.
